One man’s trashy romance novel is another woman’s treasured story

June 6, 2019 – Becky McBeckerson

“I fell in love with a dumpster,” Karrin Allyson writes on her blog. In fact, he was, in her words, a “dumpster.” But when it comes to her new romantic comedy, She Must Be Something Else, she’s not quite right.

Allyson is no stranger to trashy romance novels. As well as writing her own books, including the paranormal thriller The Christmas Body, she’s penned books about hookers, vampires, and twins. But She Must Be Something Else, which will be released on June 12, is not about virginity. Nor is it romantic comedy. And she has no problem admitting that there is a “secret” at the heart of her novel, which launched last week.

“I’m the narrator. Sort of,” Allyson says. “It’s not that surprising that I’m the narrator because I’m the main character, and I write about love and sex and romantic relationships. But what I actually write about is poop.

“Well, not poop exactly, but nature in general,” she adds. “My characters end up dating a dumpster.”

The trashy and humorous voice that Allyson hopes readers will acquire from She Must Be Something Else is one that’s quite unlike those of her other books, which she says “have a lot more meaning to them.”

She must be somebody else, I say.

“I suppose,” she says, smiling. “I’m different than what’s found on a dumpster.”

That difference will likely be evident once they get to the reveal — although she’s not going to spoil it for us.

“It’s not necessarily expected that my readers know that,” she says, “but it’s like I have a secret, and I’m getting ready to reveal it, which is why I’m presenting it as the way it is.”

She must be somebody else, I say.

“It’s just kinda funny,” she replies. “I hope it’s funny to other people, too.”
